I have been fishing a lot of frogs here lately on top of grass beds and have been getting TONS of strikes but haven't been landing too many of them. I have been fishing a floating, thick plastic frog ( don't remember who makes it, got it for a good deal) and Zoom's horny toads. I have mainly been using 30lb braided on a baitcaster and 14lb mono on a heavy spinning reel. I know you need to wait to make sure the bass has taken the lure, I understand that. But from a rigging standpoint, what is some of your techniques? I have heard trying a trailer hook but it seems like I would be getting it snagged alot on the grass. Any help would be appreciated.

I know I used to have the same problem when i ran the banjo frog alot a few years back. I decided the nose hook was no good. I tried other similar bait and they didnt work much better. I went back to the banjo and ran a worm hook clean through the bait tied it off the pulled the hook half way back out and let it set between the legs. It works much better. It held the hook still, Point up of course. Now if you still have problems with weeds and grass get weedless hook and do something similar. Or just rig the weedless hook as a trailer if that suits you. If that doesnt help then the are hitting the front of the bait and when you set the hook your just pull it out of their mouth.

A few things to try that might help. 1- Make sure your rod has good backbone but a moderate tip. If your frog rod is stiff all the way to the tip, you will pull the frog from the fishes mouth. Especialy with braid. Next is Hooks, for the Horny Toad. Zoom makes hooks for them and they work well. Try a Snagproof frog I don't miss many with them. Wait for wait of the fish, don't set the hook on the site of the blow-up. Have a follow up bait like a fluke tied on another rod in the event you miss with the frog just throw the fluke in their. A lot of times they will eat it.
Good luck and "Grab Life By the Gills!" K2

Zack, A good frog rod to try is the Castaway XP3 Grass Master Braid. It is very good with the frogs and has improved my hook up ratio. www.castaway.com

I've been having the same problem. I'm landing about 15% of the frog blow-ups. Going to try to let it take it down a little longer before setting the hook.

Randy, Check out the new Pro Frogger (All Buttoned Up) Video. Good Hook up on a good fish. I got excited and turned into a ding dong on the video but at least I can admit it.
Let me know what you think.
I checked out the hat cams.....they are pretty interesting. I am going to look in to them. Do they have a prostaff?

Have you tried Mister Twister's "Hawg Frog". I have had incredible success with this lure. In a pack, you get 5 bodies and two keeper hooks. The keeper hooks are weedless and the shanks are long enough to hook-up with fish quite well. The only down side is that small fish will often attack one of the frogs legs, and this will pull the body right off keeper barb. I sometimes use them with worm rig hooks, and this works well too. I think the best thing to do is to buy some centering-pin spring hooks. You could use them with any plastic frog you want, and i'm sure they'll increase hook-ups, and hold the body on.

Well, i live in south florida and fish for bass everyday with frogs exclusively. Here are my tips and things i have learned. I have tried to use several different makers of frogs and have been dissapointed in most. The spro frogs have an awsome paint job but that is to attract you not the bass and the double hooks they have suck for hook up ratio. I tried to use horny toad frogs but the action (or lack there of) doesnt attract as many strikes. Then i found the stanley ribbit frog! I have tried to use those screw in hooks that all these companies make and these are the problems i have had. The weighted frog hooks pull the frog under way to fast and require a fast retrieve to remain on the surface. The non-weighted hooks keep the frog pivited on the eye of the hook and usually gets in the way. Now this may not be the "proper" way to fish frogs but i almost never miss a hook up with the method i have found. I use an owner 5/0 wide gap plus hook and i texas rig the frog so it is weedless. I have found that when hunting big bass a wide gap hook stays hooked when the bass jump. Rigging my frogs this way allows the frog to slide up the line leaving the bass with nothing but a hook in his mouth. The only down fall i have found to this is i do run through a lot of frogs but to me thats a good thing! Also, one tip i will give is whenever you have the option to cast on to the bankside and pull the frog into the water it generates a lot more strikes because of the natural presentation. I also want to say i am NOT impressed with the profrogger, it cost 7 dollars for one and has one of those paint jobs to attracts you not the bass. you will catch more bass at a cheaper cost with stanley ribbit frogs. They have better action and cost 4 dollars for 5 of them.

Ive always thought about this question. We all have the same problem. Ive thought about inseting a hook straight up like a sail. If it stays straight up it could work. Also try a fine gauge hook as a teailer and rig the trailer hook with a 3 or 4 in grub so its kinda weedless. If you did it on both sides it woild be like legs. Tubes on those legs would be less weight. Also try opening the hooks up slightly for more grab. Thats all i got for this subjet. Hope it works out.
