My estimate is in the 7-8 lb range. I caught it at an old quarry in Elgin, IL that was known for the best fishing in IL to those of us who knew about it. He hit a purple plastic lizard in a submerged weed bed, about 8 feet of water less than 15' f...

I live in an area that has a lot of private ponds (for which I bug the owners for

I don't know about MN rules and regs on sturgeon fishing but here in WI we only get 3 days in February to spear them. I don't know of any other time to take them by hook and line.
I went walleye fishing in March and accidentally caught two NICE sturgeon of course I had to let them go. I was using a 3/8oz ball jig with a plastic grub on the end. I let it sit at the bottom a little too long and wasn't jigging how I was supposed to for the Walleye, lol. I caught both this way on two separate days.
hey, i know its a bit out of the ordinary, and its something new. but my brother in law is talking me over to Twin Cities MN to go sturgeon fishing, and i was wondering if anyone knew how to fish for sturgeon...that way im not completely unprepared
It's not the first musky I've caught that way. After that I was hooked and started fishing for musky most of the time. It will cost you some money for the right rod and reel and a few good musky lures but it's worth every cent. Sometimes I will go weeks at a time without a strike but when that big hog hits....it's worth all the waiting ! That 501/2 , 40 pounder was caught on the cast in the fall and it was the best fight of my life...so far. Take care dude.
