When it comes to fish, simpler is better. I like it either fried up in a simple batter with some tartar sauce or grilled in aluminum foil with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.

Very nice fish guys. Looks like 2009 was another successful fishing year for most.

If you're going to use it for everything, and not make it style-specific, I'd go with a spinning reel on a medium action rod. 8 or 10 lb. mono line would also probably do you well.

Both have their uses. I own 2 spinning reels and 2 baitcasters. Started the year with 1 of each and picked up 2 more to cover more applications. I use a spinning reel on an ultra-light for panfish and super light lures (for example, small worms Te...

About Me
I'm a college student at Northern Illinois University. I'll graduate in May of 2010 with a B.A. in finance. Right now I'm planning on sitting for my Series 7 exam this summer sometime. I have been interning at a small business for a few years and can't wait to start my career as a certified financial planner. I love fishing, golfing, basketball, baseball, hockey, hanging out with my friends and girlfriend, and of course, throwing back a few beers. I try to fish as much as possible and usually get out once a week in the summers. I fish lakes all throughout Illinois but fish mostly at a lake my family owns. I take life and fishing pretty easily and take every opportunity they give me.

Second Trip of the Year

Well I finally got out to fish again today. My cousin's husband and I had been planning to go out together for a while and we finally found a day to go. We were originally going to go to Indiana and do some musky fishing but the lakes were flooded so we went to LaSalle Lake, the cooling lake half an hour form his house. We went with his neighbor and had a decent day. I had a 2.5 lb. smallie up to the side of the boat, the 3 of us probably caught 50 to 75 small channel cats, I landed a 5 or 6 lb.… Continue

First trip of the season

Went out to Shabbona today to fish for the first time this year. The water was cold and murky. The wind was blowing but the sun was out. It got kinda chilly around 5 so we called it quits at about 6 30. Started of with a shallow running crank bait and a small spinner bait. After those failed to produce, moved to some plastics, but those didn't work either. Finally, the buddy I was fishing with suggested Texas rigging a worm, so I rigged a finesse worm Texas style with no weight and finally got a… Continue

Personally , I hate fly fishing..lol. But it is pretty big up here. Myself, I like Rapalas, Kastmasters, Model-A Bombers. Trout fishing up here is exellent if you know where to go and certain times of year you can catch em anywhere, but like most guys here-Ive moved on from trout most the time. Going after Walleye and Tiger-Muskie is much more challenging, and I am just getting into that part of it. I caught a little 10 inch walleye just today in this little lake Id never been too. Only took about 30 minutes to find him from shore.
Come on up! We'll take you to some GOOD spots..I know where some decent bass fishing is too.

Just curious, Connor - what lodge do you fish across the border? I've fished a bunch of them but I'm always looking!

I am on the road probably a portion of 40 weeks a year. For example: Next week (short week due to Mem. Day) I'll fly to Minneapolis for meetings Tuesday, fly to Pittsburgh, meetings all day Wed. Then I'll sneak off to my cabin in PA and flyfish trout for a day. Drive back to Pittsburgh, fly home to Chicago Friday afternoon.

Over the years, I've fished all over the US and a lot of the world. I'm trying to catch a fish in all 50 states - 39 down, 11 to go

I fished Shabonna once - early season for crappies. Got a few, but the lake gets pounded. I actually sold my boat 9 years ago when I moved here from upstate NY. I had 6 or 7 really good places to fish within 20 miles of me there. Pretty sparse here. I fish local ponds and the Fox River, but probabaly do most of my fishing while I'm on the road for work. I'll fish for anything, anywhere though.

Good to add a fellow Illini to my list!
