That doesn't surprise me at all. Im not kidding about this, but I once caught a nice bluegill on a 7 inch Zoom - DeadRinger. Couldn't believe it! My buddy caught one on a balsa crank bait that he cast out and let it float for a minute...those fish a…

Personal preference would be a 7' medium/heavy action ALL graphite rod with a high gear ratio baitcaster, and about 14-pound mono.

I agree, Shimano is the best you can buy. I was looking at the Sustain not too long ago and thought it was one of the best reels I have ever seen. There is a video of Larry Dahlberg catching a sailfish on a Sustain. Its sick.

I agree. Bass taste gross anyways. At least they do down here. Warm water maybe? Trout are better. No remorse for any trout under 12". Thats my rule.

Nice Pumpkinseed dude. How'd you catch him?

About Me
I love to fish. Back in Bowie TX, where I spent the first 7 years of my life, my mother would come pick me up after kindergarden with the fishin' poles in the back...and off we'd scoot to Amon Carter Lake for an afternoon of Crappie fishing. After we moved to Florida, we just couldn't seem to make the transition to saltwater. After dozens of failed attempts, we stopped fishing entirely. It wasn't till I was about 11 years old that some friends in the neighborhood introduced me to bluegill fishing with little balls of bread. We caught loads until the spot was all breamed out. Then one fateful Saturday, I saw Bill Dance Outdoors for the first time. Good ole' Bill got me itch'n to catch these green eating machines called Bass. I set out with what little I had for allowance to the K-mart across the street.

You know, I'd passed that Rooster Tail about half a dozen times before I finally picked it out. I can still remember it. It had a black and white polka-dot body...with a silver blade. I tossed that thing for nearly an hour before I finally felt my first take. I don't even remember if I set the hook. All I know and have known since then, is that the obsession was on, and I was hooked.

Since then I've caught so many bass all over this backward town...until slowly but surely, all the water I used to fish freely became the property of some stupid golf course. For about 2-3 years after high school, bass fishing and I broke up.

That is until I met a guy named Aniel. He was from Miami, and liked to fish, but had no idea about bass. This guy was asking me questions and it wasn't long before I was taking him out to my favorite stretch of shoreline. He was hooked. Later on, he bought a small John Boat. We putzed around in that thing for awhile...until he bought himself a proper bass boat. We fished for awhile here and there even as far as Okeechobee. We lost touch after he moved farther away...but I hear that he is riding around in a Nitro. Yeah...I started that.

Sometime after in 2002 I met a young boy named Sam in church. He was 8yrs old at the time and loved to fish...but had never caught anything but bluegill and the occasional bass. So I took him fishing and on his first outing, he caught a 5lb bass and was never the same again. He's 16 now and still goes fishing with me almost every week.

In 2005 I discovered fly fishing for trout. A trip to Wyoming put me on the East Fork of the Shoshone River...where I caught my first Cut-bow. I remember thinking when that fateful day had ended: "What have I done!?" Bass fishing takes a back seat to trout now. Living in Florida, I don't get much of a chance to fish for them...but at least once a year I manage to break away to Blue Ridge's lovely Toccoa, or Atlanta's Hooch'.

One day I will find a lady that loves to fish as much as I do. (Though we probably would never get anything done.) I would also love to move outta this miserable town and live somewhere else, where its cheaper to live and easier to enjoy the outdoors.

The Art of Fly-Fishing

Recently I wondered about my obsession with fly-fishing. Some call it a sport, but I believe that fly-fishing is a true art.

The artists tools are as follows: The Canvas. The Pallette, Color, Brush, Imagination, and finally Creation or Realization.

How are these tools applied to Fly Fishing? Well, lets begin with the Canvas. A Canvas is the basis of any painting. It is the matter upon which colors can be applied and a brush finds resistance. In fly fishing, the canvas corresponds to the stream… Continue

Bass: Fishing in my neck of paradise

Welcome to my very first Blog about the much talked about subject of Bass Fishing! I have the distinct privilege of living in the worst possible place in the world to fish for bass: Naples Florida. Bout the only decent bass fishing in "Gods Waiting Room" (as we call it), is in golf courses. These however, are closed to the public, and if I could count on my hands the times Ive been kicked off of them, I would need to use my toes as well. Because of this, fishing for bass here is really frustrati… Continue

Snook get bigger, pull harder, and I know how to work a mangrove shore line much better than how to read a river. Plus, here in Texas we do not have any dry fly action, it is all size 18-24s on nymphs and emergers. It does not compare to a big snook blowing up on a popper or spook.

Jon, the Trout down here in Texas are pretty big, but they are all stocked fish. I like living here in Austin, but I can't understand how you can complain about living in Naples. There is great Snook fishing. I would trade Snook for hatchery trout in a second.

Oh yeah that carp was more then I was expecting...I was wondering when he was going to get tired. I remember watching a show with Lefty Kreh & Skip. Lefty invited up to PA to fish for fresh water bone (I believe that's what he called them or reds). Well that's what Lefty called them and comparted them too. Anyway they were using 10 WT fly rod and shrip flies. He said that the carp in the area have calluses on their head from rolling rocks and searching for crawfish...You could see them doing it in the show too. Anyway that's going to be my next adventure to catch a carp...On a fly rod....I have a 9 WT so hope it works. Already got the flies too...LOL

Well if you ever make it over this way let me know and I will take you out and put you on some big bass. But it won't be long before they all start heading deep again.
