My first legal Grouper was actually caught on my 64th birthday under the Sanibel Island bridge near Ft. Myers, Florida, August 2008. Most always fish with my best friend who happens to be my spouse and soul mate....Karen.

Mullet fishing in Florida!

If you’ve never caught a mullet on a fishing pole, then this may interest you. If you have then join the few that really enjoy fishing and will do almost anything to catch a different species.

On Halloween day, Karen and I decided to put all our extensive mullet research together and go fish a short while. Normally we fish for snapper or sheepshead this time of year.

We drove the short distance to a place called Burnt Store canal and stopped at the bridge to try our luck.

After setting up my… Continue

Do fish really bite during the winter?

We're here to tell you they do..........sometimes!
Karen and I decided to take the kayak out on a small brackish water canal a couple days after New Years. Brackish water is a mixture of fresh and salt water and it carries a large variety of fish.

Knowing the water was cooler than we liked, but thinking even if we don't catch anything, we always enjoy paddling our kayak around the canals seeing all the wildlife.

For us here in Southern Florida there are many varieties of birds, lot's of mullet… Continue

Catching a Jack from a Kayak!

Karen and I arrived at one of our favorite fishing areas next to the Four Mile Cove Ecological Park.
After unloading our kayak off the rack I built, we carried it onto the dock and put it safely into the Dinwiddie canal.
The State recently removed the cement water barrier that separated brackish salt and fresh water, so we really didn’t know how the fishing there would be affected.

We loaded the small cooler, climbed in and paddled away from the dock.
I told Karen that I think I’ll try trolling… Continue

Fishing Fun with friend in Florida!

Matthew and I loaded up the kayak and headed for the Ecological Park here in Cape Coral. We arrived within 10 minutes and prepared to launch the kayak into Dinwiddie canal.
I rigged Matthew’s ultra light pole with a Styrofoam floater with 3 feet of 8 lb. leader and a worm hook, then I removed my floater and added a 3” Rapala lure to drag behind the kayak while we paddled to Dimple canal some 15 minutes away.
We saw a few mullet jumping, but no sign of Jack fish or much else except a few birds.
A… Continue

Hi Timothy, it sounds like you and your wife have a wonderful time fishing together. So are those Mayan cichlids good eating? I guess they are not a native species?
